2022 Lake County Syrah
2022 Lake County Syrah
Tasting Note
Our first ever HD Syrah is inky in color, with the naturally dark skins of Syrah combined with our
eschewing the use of sulfur coming together for an electric purple color. The nose opens with a massive
waft of fresh baked blueberry pie, with hints of sage and green peppercorn. The palate is loaded with
dark berry fruit as well, with savory herbal notes from the stem inclusion, and Syrah’s trademark round
yet grippy tannin. This wine took an extra year of bottle age to come into it’s own, but the wait has been
worth it.
Winemaking Notes
The 2022 Syrah is sourced from the Two Brothers Vineyard, on the eastern shore of Clear Lake, to the
almost directly north of Napa Valley. This is a warm region, so we harvested early to capture freshness
and maintain our desired level of alcohol. For the fermentation we used 100% whole cluster, which is a
traditional way of doing Syrah in the Northern Rhone. Two Brothers features very volcanic soils, which
give an interesting and unique tannin structure. This is an interesting wine, as the winemaking is similar
to the lighter styles red (Zweigelt, RDB) that we have done in the past, but the underlying fruit is more
similar to the Napa Cabernet, resulting in a wine that is something of a paradox—fruit forward, but also
very structured
