The 2018 Pinot represents HD’s tenth year making wine, and tenth pinot noir. Sarah designed a beautiful label to mark the occasion, incorporating each of the original art pieces from the first 10 years. Thankfully it seems like I’ve learned something over the course of the decade, because I think the ’18 is our best vintage yet. Unlike in 2017, when heat wave after heat wave made it really difficult to make the kind of light, elegant wine we want to for HD (I think we did alright, but it was tough), 2018 saw a nice even, cool growing season which actually allowed me to harvest on September 15, about two weeks later than normal. The resulting wine shows the usual savory and earthy notes, but because of the longer growing season the wine is a little more full on the palate, and the finish shows amazing layers of complexity. The wine is still evolving every day, since it never had any sulfur added, and should continue to develop over the next 5-10 years.
